Keep the Faith: Money Will Always Flow to You
I don’t know about you, but I absolutely love talking about the energy behind money.
All of us have experienced the energy behind money at some point, either when we’ve given it, received it, or both.
Firstly though, let me say that I’m aware that a lot of us are currently living through uncertain and tough economic times.
We may be managing slightly tighter budgets in the short term.
As tough and resourceful people, we’re also innovating and adapting to come out of the interesting times we’re living through smarter, wiser and stronger.
In the interim though, I want to remind you that your solid personal foundation will get you through anything.
Please do not let stress allow you to make major decisions that may not be in your best interest at any point in your life. If your business has been impacted by current economic conditions and you’ve also got other personal changes happening in your life, do not make major financial decisions. Do what you need to do to put food on the table, adjust where you need to, but allow yourself to just breathe for a while.
A friend of mine died in an accident when I was a young adult and I remember her parents being told not to make any major financial decisions for at least six months due to the stressful situation they were living through. This principle applies to all stressful situations that we find ourselves living through. Do not make the same mistake I made, where I made an extremely unwise major financial decision and sold a property (that I didn’t even need to sell) when I was going through significant and stressful personal changes that included the end of a relationship.
Please also be aware of the fact that stress is associated with scarcity thinking (which is in turn is associated with poverty), and do not allow yourself to be affected by this.
Scarcity thinking involves prioritising scarcity related demands over other demands or opportunities, both short term and long term, or missing such opportunities entirely. Scarcity thinking as a result of stress also results in risk aversion and making safer but poorer decisions. Severe stress actually reduces our ability to process information, to problem solve and to make decisions. We’ve all experienced how when we’re really anxious we can have trouble taking in new information. Because stress can also interfere with sleep, it can have an even worse impact on problem solving and decision making.
But to get back to the point of this article, just know that if you have a solid personal foundation, money will always flow to you.
Essentially, if you’re the kind of person who’s guided by core values that ensure you treat other people well, if you work hard and improve even small things when you can, and if you add value wherever you can, you’ll always be fine. This is despite whatever onslaught all of us might face at different times, whether that be AI, recession, conflict around the world, etc.
If you work for someone else you’ll be fine, and if you run a business you’ll be fine.
Money flows to you because you mean something as a human being. You stand for something and if you run a business, it too naturally stands for something as well.
A solid foundation and a business that stands for something is why people preference buying from a local café that employs local staff and provides a professional café experience even if they have less money to spend. It’s why my Mum buys her clothes from a lady who hand sews quality individual and unique clothing and sells them at markets through her small business. It’s why there’s so much joy in spending money purposefully, strategically and wisely, and spending it where it will be magnified to best effect as touched on in my blog article Buying From Small Businesses is a Vote for the World You Want to See. It’s why we still find money to support causes and non-profit organisations that are close to our hearts, even if we sometimes have to reduce the amount we donate on a short term basis.
I benefitted from this phenomenon when I ran an Australia Post agency and Community Resource Centre in a town in the wheatbelt.
Now we all know that anyone who is buying anything in the wheatbelt is doing so because they are actively choosing to buy local. No one in the wheatbelt has to buy anything locally, because they can all travel to larger centres or to Perth to buy goods and services.
When I took over the reins at the Australia Post agency and Community Resource Centre we had to make some changes and needed to start offering new products and services to improve our bottom line. We worked hard to do this, we were reliable and friendly, and magically, people came and bought the new products we stocked because they wanted to see us thrive.
The experience of receiving other people’s love in the form of their money was a great privilege.
Yes, while things are slightly tougher less money might flow to you for a while. But you’ll adapt and you’ll innovate and you’ll find other opportunities during these times, and some of these opportunities might even give you huge dividends in the future. We all know that money does not make us happy, so focusing on our selves and what we actually can control at any point always makes sense.
Essentially, if you have concrete values that give you a solid and unwavering personal foundation and that give your business a solid foundation, money will always come to you again and you will come out of the deepest recession or even depression stronger. And as soon as more money starts flowing through the economy again, plenty more of that money will come rushing back to you and/or your business.
A solid foundation and continued effort has to return something.
Because money really is energy, similar to all other energies or forces in nature. Dennis Roberts is the author of a brilliant LinkedIn article entitled, The Flow of Wealth: How to Align Money with Your Life’s Energy that I highly recommend. In this article, Dennis discusses the fact that the word currency comes from the Latin word ‘currere’, which actually means to flow or to run. And this makes perfect sense, because we see money flowing through the economy every day as a force in motion.
And as Roberts says, we support the energy flow of money best when we both give and receive it.
A friend of mine related a really good story in relation to this. He happened to be starting a new business and while he had some savings, he had no wage or other income at the time. As a result, he was being extra cautious and spending hardly any money. Luckily though, he caught up with a friend and ex client of his who reminded him that he needed to spend some money too. She and her husband had an engineering business, and while I’m not sure of the exact words she used, in essence she told him that by spending some money he shows the universe that he can handle money and that he trusts the universe to give it to him too (which it most definitely did).
In summary, I think we need to remember never to waste time in our short lives worrying about money, because the age old principles that support the flow of money to us will never change.
